What is an Adjective of Quantity?

An Adjective of Quantity describes how much of a thing is meant. It does not provide the exact number but gives a general idea about the quantity of a noun. These adjectives answer the question “How much?”



Examples of Adjective of Quantity:

The little The little money he had was spent. (जो थोड़ा-सा पैसा उसके पास था, वह खर्च हो गया।)
Enough She has enough knowledge. (उसके पास पर्याप्त ज्ञान है।)
Sufficient There is sufficient food for everyone. (सभी के लिए पर्याप्त भोजन है।)
Whole I read the whole book. (मैंने पूरी किताब पढ़ ली।)

Rules & Usage of Adjective of Quantity

  1. Used with Uncountable Nouns
    I drank some milk. (Milk is uncountable.)
    I drank some apples. (Wrong, because apples are countable.)

  2. ‘Little’, ‘A Little’, and ‘The Little’ – Difference

    • Little → Almost nothing (There is little hope.)
    • A little → Some but not much (I have a little money.)
    • The little → All that is available (The little money he had was spent.)
  3. ‘Much’ is mostly used in Negative & Interrogative Sentences  There isn’t much water in the bottle.
    Do you have much information about this topic?
    I have much water in the bottle. (Incorrect, use a lot of instead.)

 I have enough time to complete my work.
 She showed some interest in the project.
 There is little sugar left in the jar.
 Do you need any help with your homework?
 He ate the whole cake by himself!
