Qualifying University Entry Scheme (UES) – My Best Experience & Tips to Help You Succeed

If you’re aiming to join the Indian Armed Forces through the University Entry Scheme (UES), my experience can guide you through the process. This scheme is an excellent opportunity for engineering students to get a direct entry into the Indian Army, Navy, or Air Force while still in college.

What is the University Entry Scheme (UES)?

UES is a special recruitment program for pre-final year engineering students, allowing them to join the defense forces as commissioned officers without appearing for a written exam.

 Eligibility Criteria for UES:

  • Only for Engineering Students (Pre-final year B.E/B.Tech)
  • Age Limit: 18 to 24 years
  • Minimum 60% aggregate in all semesters (varies by service)
  • Indian Nationality
  • Only Male Candidates (UES Army scheme has been discontinued since 2017, but Navy/Air Force still conduct similar recruitment)

My Experience with UES Selection Process

The UES Selection Process includes:

Campus Recruitment Drive (Preliminary Interview)

  • A team from the Armed Forces visits engineering colleges.
  • They conduct a Group Discussion (GD) and a Personal Interview.
  • Topics range from current affairs, technology, and defense-related issues.

SSB Interview Call (If selected in the campus round)

  • 5-day SSB Process, including:
    • Screening Test (OIR Test + PPDT)
    • Psychological Tests (TAT, WAT, SRT, SDT)
    • GTO Tasks (Group Discussion, Group Planning Exercise, Progressive Group Tasks, Command Tasks, etc.)
    • Personal Interview
    • Conference Round

Medical Examination & Final Merit List

  • Candidates recommended by SSB undergo a medical test.
  • A final merit list is prepared, and successful candidates join the respective academy.

Key Tips to Crack UES Successfully

Prepare for GD & Interview:

  • Be well-versed in current affairs, defense-related topics, and basic technical knowledge of your branch.
  • Have a clear reason for “Why do you want to join the Armed Forces?”

Improve Communication Skills:

  • The Group Discussion (GD) round is crucial. Speak confidently and present logical points.

Physical & Mental Fitness:

  • Prepare for SSB tasks, such as outdoor challenges, physical endurance tests, and group activities.

Practice SSB Psychological Tests:

  • Word Association Test (WAT) – Practice forming positive and meaningful sentences.
  • Thematic Apperception Test (TAT) – Learn how to write impactful stories based on given images.
  • Situation Reaction Test (SRT) – Stay practical and show leadership skills.

Confidence & Leadership Qualities:

  • Officers are expected to lead. Show initiative, teamwork, and problem-solving skills.

Why is UES the Best Entry Scheme?

No written exam (unlike NDA, CDS, AFCAT).
 Direct campus recruitment for engineers.
Golden chance to serve the nation as an officer.
An opportunity to develop discipline, courage, and leadership.

Final Words

The UES journey changed my life by improving my confidence, discipline, and leadership skills. If you’re an engineering student passionate about joining the Armed Forces, this is a golden opportunity you shouldn’t miss!
