Converting direct speech to indirect speech involves altering the original spoken words to fit into a sentence without quotation marks, often requiring changes in pronouns, verb tenses, and time expressions. According to R.K. Sinha’s “Oxford Current English Grammar”, Part-3 of the section on narration provides specific guidelines for these transformations.
Key Changes from Direct to Indirect Speech:
- Pronouns: Adjust pronouns to match the perspective of the reporting speaker.
- Verb Tenses: Shift verb tenses back in time when the reporting verb is in the past tense.
- Time and Place Indicators: Modify words indicating time and place to reflect the change in context.
Examples:
-
Direct: She said, “I am glad to be here this evening.”
- Indirect: She said that she was glad to be there that evening.
-
Direct: He said, “I will do it tomorrow.”
- Indirect: He said that he would do it the next day.
-
Direct: She said, “I am starting the day after tomorrow.”
- Indirect: She said that she was starting in two days’ time.
Exercises:
To practice these transformations, consider the following direct speech sentences and convert them to indirect speech:
- He said, “I want to stay here this morning.”
- She said, “These flowers are very beautiful.”
- They said to her, “We shall see you tomorrow.”
