How to Change Direct to Indirect Speech Narration Rules 2 and it’s Examples & Exercise Solution.

Rule 2, How to Change of Tense

Note : यदि Reporting Verb Past Tense मे रहे, तब Inverted Comma के भीतर प्रयुक्त Tense मे परिवर्तन होता है ।

यदि Reporting Verb Past Tense ( Said ) रहे तो निम्नलिखित प्रकार से Tense को बदलते हैं ।

Reporting Verb “Said” को told मे बदल देते हैं ।  तथा
Inverted Comma के स्थान पर that का प्रयोग करते हैं ।

Reporting Verb के बाद प्रयुक्त to को हटा देते हैं, यानि कि लुप्त कर देते हैं ।

Change the following Sentences into Indirect Speech

1. The boys said to the teacher, ” We need your help. ”
The boys told the teacher that they needed his help.

2. He said to me, ” i am your neighbour. ”
He told me that he was my neighbour.

3. She said to me, ” i am ready to help you. ”
She told me that she was ready to help me.

4. He said to her, ” i help you because you are a good girl. ”
He told her that he helped her because she was a good girl.

5. Ram said to geeta, ” i am not going to help you. ”
Ram told geeta that he was not going to help her.

6. He said to me, ” i have no time for you. ”
He told me that he had no time for me.

7. They said to me, ” We have done everything for you. ”
They told me that they had done everything for me.

8. You said to her, ” i have not beaten your brother. ”
You told her that you had not beaten her brother.

9. He said to me, ” i have been waiting for you for two hours. ”
He told me that he had been waiting for me for two hours.

10. Meena said to Ravi, ” you are my best friend. ”
Meena told Ravi that he was her best friend.

11. He said to them, ” i can help you if you don’t harm me. ”
He told them that he could help them if they didn’t harm him.

12. The farmer said to the little boy, ” you can live with me. ”
The farmer told the little boy that he could live with him.

13. He said to you, ” i shall help you. ”
He told you that he would help you.
14. Ravi said to Leela, ” i shall be helping you. ”
Ravi told leela that he would be helping her.

15. She said, ” i shall be a nurse. ”
She said that she would be a nurse.

16. He said to me, ” you will get success if you work hard. ”
He told me that i should get success if i worked hard.

17. i said to her, ” if you help me, i shall help you. ”
i told her that if she helped me, i should help her.

18. She said to him, ” i shall be your guide. ”
She told him that she would be his guide.

19. He said, ” i could pass the examination. ”
He said that he could pass the examination.

20. The poor men said to me, ” you should help us because we depend on you. ”
The poor men told me that i should help them because they depended on me.

21. He said to her, ” you will not be able to do my work. ”
He told her that she would not be able to do his work.

22. She said to them, ” i am your neighbour so i shall help you. ”
She told them that she was their neighbour so she would help them.

23. Mohan said to me, ” since i don’t know you, i can’t help you. ”
Mohan told me that since he didn’t know me, he couldn’t help me.

24. The villagers said to the saint, ” We shall be very happy if you live in our village. ”
The villagers told the saint that they would be very happy if he lived in their village.

25. He said, ” i have everything that i need. ”
He said that he had everything that he needed.

26. She said to me, ” i don’t like you because you are not rich. ”
She told me that she didn’t like me because i was not rich.

Note : यदि Inverted Commas के भीतर कोई ऐसा कथन हो जिससे चिरंतर सत्य ( Universal truth ) या सिद्धांत का बोध हो, तो Reporting Verb के Past Tense मे रहने पर भी Reported Speech के Tense मे कोई परिवर्तन नहीं होगा । जैसे

1. He said, ” The earth is round. ”
He said that the earth is round.

2. He said, ” Work is worship. ”
He said that work is worship.

3. He said, ” Two and two is four. ”
He said that two and two is four.

4. She said, ” We can’t escape death. ”
She said that we can’t escape death.

5. My father said to me, ” Honesty is the best policy. ”
My father told me that Honesty is the best policy.

6. He remarked, ” A bad carpenter quarrels with his tools. ”
He remarked that a bad carpenter quarrels with his tools.

7. The teacher said, ” The sun rises in the east and sets in the West. ”
The teacher said that The sun rises in the east and sets in the West.

8. My father said, ” Time and tide Waite for no man.
My father said that Time and tide wait for no man.

Change Universal truth Sentence into Indirect Speech.

1. He said to me, ” i helped you. ”
He told me that he had helped me.

2. She said to him, ” i gave you my pen. ”
She told me that she had given him her pen.

3. They said to the girls, ” you danced well. ”
The told the girls that they had danced well.

4. i said to him, ” i was your neighbour. ”
i told him that i had been his neighbour.

5. The farmers said to him, ” we were always ready to help you. ”
The farmers told him that they had been always ready to help him.

6. My mother said to my brothers, ” i was making tea for you. ”
My mother told my brothers that she had been making tea for them.
