 What is Analogy in Verbal Reasoning?

 Types of Analogy:

  1. Word Analogy: Finding the relationship between two words.
    Example: Dog : Bark :: Cat : Meow

    • Relationship: Sound produced.
  2. Number Analogy: Identifying a numerical relationship.
    Example: 2 : 4 :: 3 : 6

    • Relationship: Multiplication by 2.
  3. Alphabet Analogy: Based on alphabetical sequences or positions.
    Example: A : Z :: B : Y

    • Relationship: Opposite positions in the alphabet.
  4. Object and Function: The relationship between an object and its function.
    Example: Knife : Cut :: Pen : Write

    • Function-based relationship.
  5. Person and Profession: The relationship between a person and their profession.
    Example: Doctor : Hospital :: Teacher : School

    • Place of work.
  6. Part and Whole: Identifying the part-whole relationship.
    Example: Finger : Hand :: Leaf : Tree

    • A part of a whole.

 Structure of Analogy Questions:

  1. Single Pair Analogy: One pair is given, and you have to find the related pair.
    Example: Sun : Day :: Moon : ?
    Answer: Night

  2. Double Pair Analogy: Two pairs are given, and the relationship must be maintained.
    Example: Bird : Fly :: Fish : ?
    Answer: Swim

 How to Approach Analogy Questions:

  1. Analyze the Relationship: Understand the connection between the given pair.
  2. Check All Options: If options are given, compare each carefully.
  3. Use Elimination: Eliminate irrelevant options that don’t fit the relationship.
  4. Think Logically: Avoid assumptions and focus on factual relationships.

Q1: Car : Fuel :: Man : ?
Answer: Food (Fuel powers a car, food powers a man.)

Q2: Mother : Woman :: Father : ?
Answer: Man (A mother is a woman, and a father is a man.)

Q3: Pen : Write :: Knife : ?
Answer: Cut (Pen is used for writing, a knife is used for cutting.)

Q4: 2 : 8 :: 3 : ?
Answer: 27 (2³ = 8, and 3³ = 27)
