Translation – 16: Use of “Was” & “Were”

 Negative Sentences – Part 5

 How to Form Negative Sentences with “Was” & “Were”?

To make a sentence negative, simply add “not” after “was” or “were.”

 Sentence Structure:

Subject + was/were + not + rest of the sentence

 Examples in English & Hindi

 मैं कल घर पर नहीं था।
I was not at home yesterday.

 वह खुश नहीं था।
He was not happy.

 वे स्कूल में नहीं थे।
They were not in school.

 तुम समय पर नहीं थे।
You were not on time.

 यह मुश्किल नहीं था।
It was not difficult.

 Short Forms (Contractions) in Spoken English

Was not → Wasn’t
Were not → Weren’t

 I wasn’t at home yesterday.
 They weren’t in school.

Tip: Use contractions in spoken English for fluency!
