Grammar – 19: Adjective – Introduction (Part-1)

What is an Adjective?

An adjective is a word that describes or modifies a noun or pronoun. It gives more information about the quality, quantity, size, shape, color, origin, or nature of the noun.

Examples of Adjectives:

• Quality (गुण): Beautiful, Smart, Honest
  • She is a beautiful girl. (वह एक सुंदर लड़की है।)
• Size (आकार): Big, Small, Tall
  • He lives in a big house. (वह एक बड़े घर में रहता है।)
• Shape (आकृति): Round, Square, Oval
  • This is a round table. (यह एक गोल मेज है।)
• Color (रंग): Red, Blue, Green
  • She wore a red dress. (उसने लाल रंग की ड्रेस पहनी थी।)
• Origin (मूल): Indian, American, French
  • He likes Indian food. (उसे भारतीय खाना पसंद है।)
• Quantity (मात्रा): Some, Many, Few
  • I have many friends. (मेरे कई दोस्त हैं।)
• Opinion (राय): Good, Bad, Excellent
  • It was an excellent movie. (यह एक शानदार फिल्म थी।)

Types of Adjectives

Descriptive Adjectives – Show quality (e.g., happy, brave, soft)
Quantitative Adjectives – Show amount (e.g., some, many, few)
Demonstrative Adjectives – Point out specific things (e.g., this, that, these, those)
Possessive Adjectives – Show possession (e.g., my, your, his, her)
Interrogative Adjectives – Used in questions (e.g., which, what, whose)
Comparative & Superlative Adjectives – Used for comparison (e.g., taller, tallest)

Examples in Sentences

Descriptive: She has a beautiful voice.
Quantitative: I have three pens.
Demonstrative: This book is mine.
Possessive: My brother is a doctor.
Interrogative: Which dress do you like?
Comparative: She is taller than her sister.
