 What is a Pronoun?

A pronoun is a word that replaces a noun in a sentence to avoid repetition.

Example:

• John is my friend. He is very kind. (Here, “He” replaces “John”)

 Types of Pronouns (Part-3)

In previous lessons, we covered Personal, Possessive, and Demonstrative Pronouns. Now, let’s explore more types:

 Reflexive Pronouns

These pronouns refer back to the subject of the sentence. They end in -self (singular) or -selves (plural).

Examples:

• I hurt myself.
• She prepared the food herself.
• They enjoyed themselves at the party.

 Emphatic (Intensive) Pronouns

These pronouns also end in -self or -selves but are used for emphasis.

Examples:

• I myself saw the accident.
• The CEO himself attended the meeting.

Tip: If you remove an emphatic pronoun, the sentence still makes sense!

 Relative Pronouns

Used to connect clauses and provide more information about a noun.

Examples:

• The boy who won the race is my cousin.
• This is the book that I was looking for.
• The teacher whom I respect the most is retiring.

Common Relative Pronouns: who, whom, whose, which, that.

 Interrogative Pronouns

Used to ask questions.

Examples:

• Who is your best friend?
• Which is your favorite color?
• Whose book is this?

Common Interrogative Pronouns: who, whom, whose, which, what.

 Indefinite Pronouns

Used to refer to people or things in a general way (not specific).

Examples:

• Someone is knocking at the door.
• Nobody knows the truth.
• Everything is ready for the trip.

Common Indefinite Pronouns: someone, anyone, everyone, nobody, everything, something.
