 NOUNS – INTRODUCTION (PART-1)

 What is a Noun?

A noun is the name of a person, place, thing, or idea. It is one of the most important parts of speech in English grammar.

Examples of Nouns:

• Person – Ram, Teacher, Doctor, Mother
• Place – Delhi, School, Park, Office
• Thing – Table, Book, Pen, Mobile
• Idea/Feeling – Honesty, Love, Anger, Happiness

 Types of Nouns

Proper Noun (विशेष संज्ञा)

• A specific name of a person, place, or thing.
• Always starts with a capital letter.
• Examples: India, Taj Mahal, Rahul, Amazon

Common Noun (जातिवाचक संज्ञा)

• A general name for people, places, or things.
• Examples: Boy, City, Car, River

Collective Noun (समूहवाचक संज्ञा)

• A word that represents a group of things or people.
• Examples: Army (soldiers), Team (players), Flock (birds)

Abstract Noun (भाववाचक संज्ञा)

• Represents ideas, qualities, or emotions.
• Examples: Honesty, Courage, Wisdom, Beauty

Material Noun (द्रव्यवाचक संज्ञा)

• A noun that refers to materials or substances.
• Examples: Gold, Water, Air, Cotton

 Examples in Sentences:

Proper Noun: Sachin Tendulkar is a great cricketer.
Common Noun: The girl is playing in the park.
Collective Noun: A bunch of grapes is on the table.
Abstract Noun: Honesty is the best policy.
Material Noun: Gold is a precious metal.

 Rules to Remember

Proper nouns always start with a capital letter.
Abstract nouns cannot be touched, they are only felt.
Material nouns do not have a plural form (e.g., We don’t say golds or airs).
