“The Love of God – A Short Story by Swami Vivekananda”
One day, a disciple asked Swami Vivekananda:
“Swamiji, how can I truly love God? How do I reach Him?”
Swamiji smiled and told him a story:
There was once a young man who went to a spiritual master and said,
“Master, I want to find God. Please show me the way.”
The master looked at the youth, then calmly said,
“Come with me.”
He led the young man to a river and they both waded into the water, chest-deep. Suddenly, the master pushed the young man’s head underwater with great force and held it there. The boy struggled, kicking and flailing his arms, desperate for air.
After a while, the master let him go. Gasping, the young man burst to the surface, breathing heavily, eyes wide with shock.
The master asked him gently,
“While you were under the water, what did you desire most?”
The young man replied,
“Air! I wanted air more than anything!”
The master said,
“When you desire God the same way — with your whole heart and soul, with that same intensity and desperation — only then will you find Him.”
Swami Vivekananda turned to the disciple and said:
“This is the kind of love and longing one must have for God — not mere rituals or words, but a burning desire from within. That is true bhakti (devotion).”
Moral of the Story:
To truly love God is not to merely speak His name, but to seek Him with the same urgency with which we seek life itself.
