Kolkata-born Satyendranath’s father Surendranath Bose was an officer in Railways. Satyendra was intelligent from the beginning and his goal was always to top the class. In 1915, he got the first place in the University of Kolkata and in the same year translated Einstein’s original theory of relativity written in German into English. After working with Currie and Luis the Broglie, he went to Berlin, where Einstein received him with emotion. In 1958, he was made a Fellow of the Royal Society, London, and the Government of India awarded the Padma Vibhushan the National Professor. Even in old age, he visited various scientific institutions of the country and guided the young scientists. He died in Kolkata at the age of 80 __.
