Rules : Adjectives of quantity and number
few, little अल्प, बहुत ही कम—–नही के बराबर
a few, a little कुछ, थोड़ा, not many
the few, the little जो कुछ, जो थोड़ा, जो अल्प
( a ) few, a few, the few का प्रयोग Plural Countable Noun के साथ किया जाता है या होता है । जैसे –
Cows, boys, pens etc.
( b ) Iettle, a little, the little का प्रयोग Singular Uncountable Noun के साथ किया जाता है या होता है । जैसे –
Water, rice, money, love etc.
Examples of few, little & some
1. मुझे थोड़ा चावल है । i have a little rice.
2. मुझे थोड़े घोड़े हैं । i have a few horses.
3. मुझे नही के बराबर पैसे हैं । i have little money.
4. मुझे नही के बराबर दोस्त है । i have few friends.
5. जो थोड़ी चीनी तुम्हारे पास है, मुझे दो । Give me the little sugar you have.
6. जो कुछ दोस्त थे, मुझे छोड़ चुके हैं । The few friends i had, have left me.
Note : Some का अर्थ भी कुछ होता है । और इसके साथ Countable और Uncountable दोनो nouns का प्रयोग होता है जैसे
1. मेरे पास कुछ दूध है । i have some milk.
2. मेरे पास कुछ पुस्तकें हैं । i have some books.
a few/a little का प्रयोग ” बहुत कम ” का भाव दिखाने के लिए निरपेक्ष ढंग से किया जाता है । जबकि Some का प्रयोग प्रायः सापेक्ष ढंग से किया जाता है ।
Some is generally used for an unspecified number or amount of something ( person, animal, thing etc ) that is less than the total being considered.

इस बगीचे मे थोड़े फूल हैं । There are a few flowers in this garden.
मेरे पास कुछ दोस्त हैं । i have a few friends.
उसके पास नही के बराबर दोस्त है । He has few friends.
मेरे पास नही के बराबर दूध है । i have little milk.
मेरी गायें नही के बराबर दूध देती है । My cows give little milk.
राम के बगीचे मे नही के बराबर फूल है । There are few flowers in Ram’s garden.
उसे अपनी पत्नी के लिए नही के बराबर प्यार है । He has little love for his wife.
जो कुछ कलमें । the few pens.
जो थोड़ा समय । the little time.
जो थोड़े लड़के । the few boys.
जो कुछ पानी । the little water.
जो कुछ दोस्त थे, अब मुझे छोड़ चुके हैं । the few friends i had, have left me now.
उसके पास नही के बराबर आशा है । He has little hope.
तुम्हे थोड़ा चावल और थोड़े आम हैं । You have a little rice and a few mangoes.
कम ज्ञान खतरनाक चीज है । A little knowledge is a dangerous thing.

Much और Many के प्रयोग के संबंध मे कुछ विशेष बातें ध्यान मे रखें ।
( a ) Much और Many का प्रयोग सामान्यतया Negative और interrogative Sentence मे होता है ।
मेरे पास बहुत दूध नहीं है । i have not much milk.
मेरे पास बहुत/अनेक कलमें नहीं हैं । i have not many pens.
क्या तुम्हारे पास बहुत सोना है ? Have you much gold ?
क्या तुम्हें बहुत/अनेक गायें हैं ? Have you many cases ?
( b ) Affirmative Sentence मे Much और Many का प्रयोग Subject के साथ होता है । परंतु Object के साथ नही होता है । ऐसी स्थिति मे Object के साथ lots of, a lot of, a good deal of इत्यादि का प्रयोग होता है । जैसे
मैने बहुत पानी पीया है । I have drunk a lot of water.
मैने बहुत पानी नहीं पीया है । I have not drunk much water.
बहुत/अनेक लड़के विधालय आए । Many boys came to school.
( c ) Affirmative Sentence मे Much / Many का प्रयोग Subject और Object दोनो के साथ तब होता है जब Much/Many के साथ as, how, या too आता है । जैसे
I drunk too much of milk.
परंतु I drunk lots of milk.
इस संदर्भ मे A.S Hornby की उक्ति को समझे ।

There is a tendency for much and many, when not modified by how or too, to occur in negative and interrogative sentences and not normally in purely affirmative sentences. in affirmative sentences such compound determinatives as a lot ( of ), a large number ( quantity, amount ) of, and plenty of are preferred.
बहुत की अंग्रेजी many, much, a lot of, lots of, plenty of, a good deal of, a large number of, a large quantity of, a large amount of, heaps of इत्यादि होती है ।
( a ) Many का प्रयोग Plural Countable Noun के साथ किया जाता है ।
बहुत लड़के Many boys
बहुत कलमें Many pens
( b ) Much का प्रयोग Singular Uncountable Noun के साथ किया जाता है ।
बहुत पानी Much water
बहुत दूध Much milk
( c ) a lot of, lots of, a good deal of, heaps of का प्रयोग countable और Uncountable दोनो प्रकार के nouns के साथ होता है जैसे
बहुत दूध a lot of milk
बहुत आम a lot of mangoes
( d ) a large number of, a number of के साथ Plural Countable Noun का प्रयोग होता है । जैसे
a number of boys.
( e ) a large quantity of, a large amount of के साथ Uncountable Noun का प्रयोग होता है । जैसे
a large quantity of sand.
