📘 Lesson 06: Transliterations

(From Hindi to English)

🔤 What is Transliterations?

Transliteration means writing Hindi words using English letters.
It’s not translation – you’re just representing the sound of a word in another script (English alphabet).

📝 Examples of Transliterations:

Hindi (देवनागरी) Transliteration in English
नमस्ते Namaste
धन्यवाद Dhanyavaad
कैसे हो? Kaise ho?
मेरा नाम राज है। Mera naam Raj hai.
तुम कहाँ जा रहे हो? Tum kahaan ja rahe ho?

🎯 Why Learn Transliterations?

  • Helpful for beginners who can speak Hindi but want to practice English using Roman script.

  • Useful in SMS, WhatsApp, and social media texting.

  • Makes it easier to learn pronunciation when reading English.

🧠 Practice Exercise (Transliterate the Hindi Sentences):

  1. मैं स्कूल जा रहा हूँ।
👉 Main school ja raha hoon.

  2. वह क्या कर रही है?
👉 Wah kya kar rahi hai?

  3. यह मेरा दोस्त है।
    👉 Yeh mera dost hai.

  4. मैं ठीक हूँ, धन्यवाद।
    👉 Main theek hoon, dhanyavaad.

  5. आप कहाँ रहते हैं?
    👉 Aap kahaan rehte hain?

📚 Tips:

  • Use “kh” for ख, “th” for थ, “ph” for फ

  • Don’t confuse transliteration with translation

  • Focus on sound, not meaning
