“Was” and “Were” are past tense forms of the verb “to be.” They are used in different contexts based on subject and sentence structure.
Rules for Using “Was” and “Were”
Use of “Was”
We use “was” with singular subjects (I, He, She, It).
I was at home yesterday.
He was my best friend.
She was very happy.
Use of “Were”
We use “were” with plural subjects (You, We, They).
You were late for the meeting.
We were playing cricket.
They were at the park.
Exception: “You” always takes “were” (even in singular form).
You was my best friend. (Incorrect)
