 SSB Training – Day 03: Half Group Task (HGT)

 What is the Half Group Task (HGT)?

  • Half Group Task (HGT) is a group obstacle task conducted in the GTO (Group Testing Officer) series during the SSB Interview.

  • The group is divided into smaller subgroups (usually 5-6 candidates).

  • It is similar to the Progressive Group Task (PGT) but shorter and simpler.

  • The task tests teamwork, leadership, and problem-solving under pressure.

 Purpose of Half Group Task

 Tests teamwork and cooperation.
 Checks decision-making under time constraints.
 Assesses leadership qualities.
 Evaluates communication and confidence.
 Observes practical intelligence and adaptability.

 Rules of Half Group Task (HGT)

Start Line & Finish Line → The group has to cross an obstacle from start to finish using resources.
Helping Materials → Candidates get a wooden plank, rope, or balli (log) to complete the task.
Color Zones:

  • Blue (Allowed Zone) → Candidates & materials can touch.

  • Red (Restricted Zone)No one can touch (penalty if violated).

  • White (Neutral Zone) → Can be used strategically.
    Time Limit → Usually 10-15 minutes.
    No Jumping → Jumping over obstacles is not allowed.
    No Direct Ground Contact → You cannot touch the ground inside restricted zones.

 How to Perform Well in HGT?

Be Confident → Take initiative but don’t be dominating.
Communicate Clearly → Suggest ideas politely.
Use Helping Materials Wisely → Place planks and ropes logically.
Follow the Rules → Avoid touching red zones or jumping.
Encourage Teamwork → Help others complete the task.
Observe First, Act Smartly → Analyze the task before executing.

 Example of a Half Group Task

Imagine there is a river (obstacle) between two platforms. Your team is given:

  • 1 Wooden Plank

  • 1 Rope

Goal: Cross the river without touching the water (restricted zone).

Possible Strategy:
 Place the plank on a stable platform (Blue Zone).
 Use the rope to balance and help teammates cross.
 Ensure each member crosses safely before moving the plank.
